Patty’s Pen Today we often hear how small the dance world really is, and it is. Just had my nails done today and across from me were sitting two people who didn’t know each other, but who knew me from the dance studio. That was scary! Everyone seems to know everyone or at least heard about someone. If your own name is mentioned in some way, you can only hope it is in a positive way..
But, no matter how hard some of us try – no matter what we do or in what area of life we are in – there seems to be people who want to hurt others. We all find when dealing with difficult people, we realize that they care very little about you or anyone else. Their focus is on themselves, only on themselves. It’s all about “me”, caring very little, if any, about those they hurt and the lies they tell. People who don’t tell the truth are the ultimate manipulators. They seek not only to manipulate people, but truth itself.
Difficult people, unfortunately, won’t change on their own, because they tend not to change. Because they tend not to change, their behavior is usually predictable. We refer to these people – for lack of a better word – as “schemers”. These are ones that almost inevitably try to win over allies to their cause. Schemers are usually good at winning tactical battles, but ultimately lose the war….
What we have to remember is to hold on to our present allies and to write off our current enemies and win over neutral parties. You accomplish this with tack and diplomacy – something the schemer obviously does not possess.
But stop and think how long are we really considered allies or friends? How long does trust and friendship really last with those type of people? What happens when we no longer can give them what they want and they no longer need us? What you have to remember is “users” and “manipulators” are only out for themselves – and no one else.
Keep difficult people in perspective by recognizing that they are in the minority. Focus on your friends and family. Focus on those who are helpful and with those with whom it is a pleasure to work and be with.
Unfortunately in the dance world, we have our share of these types of people. At Backstreet we work hard and do our best to create an environment that is uplifting and beneficial, not only to our students, but also their families.
Remember, there is a saying that goes “The only thing to keep close to you other than your friends – are your enemies”. People should not be led away by false promises and those suffering allusions of grandeur.
